Is a fixed rate always cheaper than a variable rate?

No. A fixed rate buys certainty, not a discount. It can be above the variable rate when you sign and stay there for the whole term, or below it. What a fixed rate guarantees is that the number will not move for the length of the contract.

What happens when my fixed-rate contract ends?

Most plans roll onto the marketer's standard variable rate unless you act. That rate is not capped and can be well above what you were paying. Note your end date when you sign.

Should I pick a short introductory rate, a 12-month lock or a 24-month lock?

The PSC's October 2026 chart has these fixed terms: seven 6-month (lowest $0.690 per therm), 17 12-month (lowest $0.599 per therm), four 18-month (lowest $0.629 per therm), 12 24-month (lowest $0.629 per therm), three 36-month (lowest $0.709 per therm). It also lists nine introductory or promotional variable rates, which typically last a short window and then revert to the marketer's ongoing variable rate. A longer lock protects you from price rises for longer, but it is not automatically cheaper and its exit fee can be higher if you leave early. Compare by estimated annual cost, check the exit fee and the end date, and use the term filter on the fixed-plans table.
